Online Dating Websites – 5 Myths About Online Dating Websites

By Lucas Owen

If you are considering using online dating websites, there may be a few stories that you have heard about them that may have cast a slight doubt to your intentions. Remember when you were in grade school and were being whispered to in science class about a piece of gossip? Remember how that gossip spread around like wildfire. By the time you got to your math class, you were being told a totally different version of that piece of gossip by another class member. It’s no different with online dating websites. These are 5 myths about online dating websites that you may have already heard.

Only Crazy People Use Them

Sure enough you have heard this one. It is innately human to want to label something that we are unfamiliar with in a negative way. No, there are very few crazy people using online dating websites. I think crazy people have a lot more on their plate than dealing with an online dating text message or browsing profiles. Just ask Beetlejuice.

They Steal Your Personal Information

Again, another untrue myth about online dating websites. In this day and age, there are many online dating websites that are legitimate businesses. Some of them, such as Friendfinder.com take it a step further by ensuring that every personal transaction is done on a secure and encrypted page. The survival of an online dating website is truly dependent upon your identity and information being protected. They wouldn’t have very many members around if every member they had was suddenly receiving personal emails from Amazon.com, thanking them for their purchase of a 6 pack of Heinz Spotted Dick Sponge Pudding in 9.4 ounce cans.

They Only Send You Spam Messages

Spam is something that many people are very afraid and quite frankly, sick of. It can be like an infectious disease pervading through your email accounts and social media accounts. It is understandable that most people are wary of this and can label online dating websites as places where you can receive a lot of spam messages. Now, this can be true for certain online dating websites, particularly those that are free but for the majority, this is not true. If you are on a premium online dating website, the only type of spam you are going to be getting is a member asking you if you eat spam. Now, that’s going to make for a very interesting conversation.

They Are Run By A Syndicate Of Nefarious Criminals

How many times have you seen the caricature Hollywood bad guy? You know. He is sitting behind his desk, chewing  and smoking on a long stub of cigar while his henchman quivering in his boots is giving him the day’s latest business report. Henchman says, “We lost the Steven’s account boss,” while gulping down in fear and the boss stops, bolts to his feet, slams his hand on the desk and says, “Kill him!” Okay, this is a bit melodramatic but you get the point. For the most part, there are no nefarious criminals running online dating websites. Save them for your imagination or the next Hollywood romp.

They Are Transient

It is true that there are some online dating websites that are transient. They are here today and gone tomorrow. However, if you pick one of the good online dating websites you will not have to worry about this. Some online dating websites have been around for over a decade. These online dating websites are not going anywhere any time soon.

These are only myths about online dating websites and bare no real resemblance to the facts. Think about when you were in grade school at the receiving end of that overly rehashed piece of gossip in science class. What did you ultimately discover a week later? None of it was true. At least, none of the versions you heard.
