I thought he wanted something serious

So I met this guy that would always send me signals that he liked me and what not.. he asked for my number started texting me looked like he was super into me but then when he would text me he would take hours to reply. So I told him if he was going to not reply why text me and that’s when things changed. He told me he would hate to get my hopes up for no reason when he had told me he really liked me that he wanted to get to know me to see where things went.. so just recently he told me that he is just looking for friends and that hurt me… so I wonder like what made him change his mind about getting to know me etc.. he is a guy I really like so I want to know what I can do. Thank you!
